FAQ

How do I enroll at Portland Kung Fu?

  • To sign up, first schedule an introductory lesson on our website. During the introductory lesson we will go over the basic tools and exercises of the Ving Tsun system to prepare you for your first class. We will also be able to go over any questions you may have and discuss your training goals on a one-on-one basis.

How much is the tuition at Portland Kung Fu?

  • The tuition ranges between $150 - $200 per month, depending on the program you sign up for. The lower rates can be secured by signing on for a long-term training agreement or by pre-paying tuition by semester.

What is the class schedule?

  • The adult men’s training program meets on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 12:00PM and 7:00PM.
  • The adult women’s training program meets on Tuesday and Thursday at 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM, and Saturday at 10:00AM.
  • The children’s program meets Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00PM.

How long are classes?

  • The standard adult class is 2 hours long. Beginners start with a 1-hour program and work their way up to the full 2 hours over the first few weeks of training. Additional training opportunities outside of the standard 2-hour class program open up to students over time.
  • The children’s program classes are 1 hour long.

Is the training beginner friendly?

  • Yes. The training system is designed to develop fundamental techniques in practitioners with little to no experience. Even experienced martial artists gain a lot of insight from the Ving Tsun foundational exercises.
  • Portland Kung Fu is a martial arts school where the doors are open to people of all abilities.

What is kung fu training?

  • Kung fu is a full spectrum training program designed to sharpen the body, the mind, and the spirit. Through developing a complete and highly effective self defense system you will also strengthen your body and mind to be more prepared for life’s many challenges.

What style of kung fu do you train?

  • We train Ving Tsun as taught in the Moy Tung lineage through Grandmaster Moy Yat and Yip Man. This highly efficient training system traces it’s roots back to the Shaolin Temple in southern China.

How long do I have to train to be able to defend myself?

  • Even the information from the intro lesson will help you be more capable of holding your ground and fending off an attacker. A basic self-defense program is 3 months, 90 days. That’s enough time for the movements to sink in and become habitual. The complete Ving Tsun basic training system is taught in 1 year, and a level of expertise can be achieved within 3 years (1000 hours).

Where is the school located?

  • The school is located in the downtown Portland Maine Arts District. We are in the State Theater building on the corner of Congress St. and High St. Parking can be found on the street or in any of the nearby parking garages.

Are there any discounts available?

  • We do offer discounts for veterans and active military as well as teachers and first responders. Family discounts are also available to members of the same household.
